The Werewolf Meets His Match by Kristen Painter

Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town where Halloween is celebrated 365 days a year. The tourists think it’s all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better. Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs and all.

Getting arrested wasn’t on werewolf Ivy Kincaid’s agenda when she arrived in Nocturne Falls, but her life rarely goes according to plan. The upside of spending the night in the local lock-up is finding a hotel room is no longer a worry…but the downside is the man she’s come to marry will get his first impression of her behind bars. Not exactly the way Ivy was hoping to meet her pack’s sworn enemy…aka her fiancé.

Sheriff (and werewolf) Hank Merrow is the alpha’s heir. Everything he’s ever done, from becoming an Army Ranger to serving in law enforcement, has been in preparation for the day he’ll take over. Getting married to cement a shaky truce is no different. Hank will do his duty, even if it means shackling himself to a woman he has no intention of liking, let alone loving.

But Ivy is nothing like Hank expected. As feisty as she is beautiful, she’s as determined as he is to make a go of marriage for the sake of peace between their packs. The trouble is, Ivy has secrets that could destroy everything Hank holds dear…including his newfound love for her.

Ivy has arrived in Nocturne Falls with a heavy heart and too many secrets.  She is to be married in three days time, on the night of the full moon as is werewolf tradition… to a man she hasn’t even met yet.  She suspects he’s a good man because her father wouldn’t want to screw over someone just like himself that’s for sure.  As the daughter of an Alpha she isn’t surprised at the arranged marriage and her soon to be husband probably isn’t either – but what her father has planned in joining these two powerful packs is diabolical at the least and she wishes that she didn’t have to go along with it – but she has no choice, at all.  Once the deed is done she intends to get Charlie and run as far away from both families as she possibly can.  She knows there is no happy ending in this marriage only betrayal and harm will come of her showing up in Hanks town.

As the son of the Alpha, Hank always knew that an arranged marriage might be in his future.  That’s why he’s rarely dated because what would be the point in eventually having to leave the relationship because of family obligations.  Even though he understands that this arrangement is being pressured on his father to pay a debt to an unsavory pack, he also knows that neither he or his future bride really have no choice in the matter.  All he can hope for at this point is that they at least can like each other and try to make a good marriage out of this forced issue between their packs.

Hank wasn’t intending to fall for his unexpected bride, and Ivy felt even more guilty the better she got to know and like Hank.  Events will begin to unfold that will expose some of Ivy’s secrets.  She’s so afraid to trust but Hank and the people of Nocturne Falls are beginning to open up a small glimmer of hope… maybe they can find that happy, if they’re willing to fight for it.

After only three stories read, I am beginning to develop such a respect for Kristen Painter’s works that I’ll probably go back and read her entire back list to get caught up.  There are so many unexpected layers to The Werewolf Meets His Match.  Our opinion of and reaction to Ivy is going to go through some stages as her real personality is revealed and her secrets are exposed.  Her father is one nasty piece of…work.  His schemes and his cruelty will be shown – and I doubt that any reader can avoid hating this man with a passion.  Yet without his schemes Ivy and Charlie would not have their freedom or the wonderful life that being with Hank can insure.  So… what happens is for the best, even if there’s a lot of crap to get through to the happy forever part.

I really enjoyed Ivy and Hank’s interactions.  They felt like a couple starting that liking maybe falling for each other phase of a relationship.  They felt real and yeah, mistakes were made but isn’t that part of a growing relationship too?  I adored Charlie, he is the sweetest little boy and he’ll steal your heart too.

The secondary characters of Nocturne Falls are a delight.  As time goes on we’ll know more about them all through their own stories, but for now it’s fun getting to meet them and see their interactions with our couple.

Yes, I’ve been rather vague – for a reason.  The Werewolf Meets His Match is a story that you should experience first hand.  It’s funny, sad – full of anger and hope – and gives you the sense of Nocturne Falls being a safe haven where anyone could find their happy ever after.  I really enjoyed this story and have downloaded the next one in the series.  Now I have to say this, mainly because I’ve read chatter on different blogs.  Please, please do not judge a book’s content by the cover.  I happen to find these covers fun and quirky and eye catching.  They give a little hint to the story within, but what you get once you start reading is simply amazing.  Please don’t miss a great story because the cover is different from what you’d normally pick up, okay?
